Xian Climate & Best Time to Visit Xian
Nestled between the Qinling Mountains and the Weihe River along the southern edge of the Guan Zhong Plain in Shaanxi Province, Xian is known for its four distinct seasons. In a warm temperate zone, Xian is characterized by a continental monsoon climate with warm and rainy summers, dry and seldom snowy winters, and extended spells of rain during spring and autumn months.
Spring
Temperatures rise quickly during spring (March to May) but these months are also prone to fluctuations. The average temperature in spring ranges fro 7.9C in March to 19.4C in May. Although a quarter of the area's annual rainfall occurs in spring, pleasant temperatures, gentle breezes and warm sunshine make it an ideal time of year to enjoy some of Xian's many outdoor activities.
Even though summers (June to August) have a tendency to be both hot and humid, visitors flock to Xian's historical sights.
Summer
Known as one of China's 'stove' cities, Xian experiences its warmest temperatures in July, with the highest average temperature being 32C and the maximum temperature often above 40C. Although the excessive heat can sometimes be difficult to bear, frequent rains provide relief during this time of the year. Nearly half of Xian's annual rainfall occurs during the summer.
Autumn
The onset of autumn often brings with it the lingering rains of summer (September to November). While the early autumn period is cool and can be overcast, late autumn is usually quire pleasant.
Winter(December to February) is dry and cold with the occasional dusting of snow. The coldest month is January, with an average temperature of 0C. In order to avoid crowds and dodge typically high temperatures, the best time to visit Xian is usually Spring and Autumn. All in all, spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the best seasons during the year for traveling here.
