Xian’s extensive historical past makes it an exciting city to search for unique cultural relics, elaborate artwork, and antiques.  Some of Xian’s most popular items include paper cuttings, folk paintings, and replicas of the Terracotta Warriors.  Department stores and busy open-air markets are plentiful in Xian so be sure to come with extra room in your suitcase!
Folk paintings:  The history of traditional folk painting stems from techniques used in ancient Chinese brush painting.  These artful depictions of life in the Chinese countryside feature beautiful images of animals, flowers, birds, and even cultural and historical figures.
Green porcelain:  Qing Ciqi, the ancient method of porcelain craftwork, evolved during the Song Dynasty.  Decorative themes include detailed animals and flowers.  The most commonly found pieces are usually green or blue in color.  This elegant yet durable porcelain is commonly used to make tea pots.
Paper cuttings:  The fine craft of paper cutting is widely practiced in the folk villages of this region.  The delicate decorations typically adorn doors and windows of local homes during times of celebration like holidays or weddings.  These inexpensive crafts, rich and varied in design, are traditionally symbolic of god luck and happiness.  The beautiful cuttings also oftentimes depict landscapes, legends, and folk stories native to the villagers that craft them.Terracotta Warriors:  Replicas of the Terracotta Warriors are sold in all sizes throughout Xian.  Soldiers range in size and price from a few inches tall and a few dollars, to life-sized replicas selling for several thousand US dollars.  Don’t worry, the cost of shipping is typically included in the price of the life-sized soldiers.
