Huaqing Hot Spring (Huaqing Chi)

A visit to Huaqing Hot Springs at the foot of Mt. Lishan is a magical and relaxing step back in time to the glorious era of the Tang Dynasty. The springs were first developed as an imperial retreat over 2,500 years ago, but today the crystal clear mineral waters have become a popular destination for Chinese travelers seeking a refreshing and relaxing escape from the excitement of China’s bustling cities.
The history of this serene arena is steeped deeply in legend. It is believed that the complex was first created by King You of the Western Zhou Dynasty (11 BC-711 BC), who had a palace built at this location. Subsequent additions were made by later emperors during the Western Han Dynasty. It was under the command of Emperor Xuanhong though, that the pools of the Huaqing Hot Springs evolved into what they are today. Legend says that the Emperor too a particular liking to a poor concubine named Yang Gufei, who he frequently invited to join him at the hot springs. During his reign the Emperor made nearly 40 visits to the palace retreat, indulging in the star-crossed love he shared with Yang Gufei. Soon after the Emperor's reign the baths at the palace were destroyed.  They were discovered again though in the early 1980's when they were excavated and renovated.  Many of the original Tang Dynasty structures on the grounds were rebuilt as well.
The pools at Huaqing remain at a constant 43 degrees Celsius (109 F) and are rich in minerals, thus making it an ideal retreat steeped in both historical beauty and natural splendor.
