Forest Stele

The Confucian temple on Sanxue Jie Street in Xian holds a rare and fascinating collection of Stele, massive stone tablets inscribed with ancient Chinese calligraphy.  The collection has come to be known as the Forest of Stele, containing over 1,000 pieces that date back nearly 900 years.  The museum contains the world’s largest library of stone tablets, including steles originating during the Han and Tang Dynasties, dating back to 206 BC.  The temple was initially built to preserve the Thirteen Classics of Final Piety, a Tang Dynasty treasure, and as the collection grew the building was renamed the Forest of Stele in the Qing Dynasty.  The museum is composed of seven exhibition halls displaying ancient calligraphy, historical documents, and carvings.  This ancient art form is studied and practiced by many and the museum provides an intriguing opportunity to understand ancient Chinese history and culture.
