Famen Temple
One of Chinese Buddhism's most important temples was erected during the Eastern Hand Dynasty in what is now Famen Town within Fufeng County, approximately 120k west of Xian. Renound for the historical legend explaining its sacred connection to Sakyamuni Buddha, the Famen Temple is composed of a 13-story octagonal pagoda beneath which a finger of the Buddha is said to be buried, and the Famen Temple Museum housing an astonishing collection of ancient treasures.
It is said that in 147 AD the King of India journeyed through Asia on a mission of atonement, distributing sacred Buddhist relics. He erected the Famen Temple in China, enshrining within it the fingers of Sakyamuni. During the Tang Dynasty this relic was revered and worshiped by Emperors. Although the passing of time erased the tale, the legend resurfaced in 1981 when torrential rains eroded the region, revealing the crypt, shrine, and an intact underground palace holding countless treasures. The site is still a place of pilgrimage for Buddhists, and also attracts a great number of visitors reveling at the collection of Tang Dynasty Relics.
