Banpo Museum
The excavation site of an ancient neolithic matriarchal community on the eastern edge of Xian City in Shanxi Province became the home of the Banpo Museum. Established in 1958, the museum was created to document the 6,000 year old history of the Yangshao Culture, exhibiting wooden and stone domestic and production tools essential in the primitive farming practices, pottery making, fishing, and daily life of the community.
Two exhibition halls make up the 4,500 sq meter museum. The first hall is divided into two parts and contains an extensive collection of unearthed relics including tools, artwork, and adornments, providing great insight into the social, cultural, and practical factors of this period in history. The second part contains changing exhibits pertaining to folklore and art and its significant impact on the history of Yangshao culture.
The largest portion of the museum is dedicated to exhibitions displaying specific characteristics of the excavation site, including the residential, pottery-making, and burial areas. this fascinating look at the primitive aboriginal roots of this society reflects on systems of production and social conditions as they existed at the time. The intriguing history contained in the museum and preserved in the Banpo Matriarchal Clan Community Village carries on the ancient cultural beginnings of an enduring civilization.
