Wuxi is China's largest producer of red earthenware including clay figurines and teapots. Exhibition galleries throughout the city display Wuxi's diverse selection of hand crafted Chinese teapots. Collections uniquely articulate the level of detail and quality in Wuxi's teapots. Wuxi is also known for its freshwater pearls, silk embroidery and unique porcelain utensils. Markets of varying scales are widely abundant in Wuxi selling anything from traditional Chinese and local products to imported commercial goods.
YIXING TEAPOTS: Shopping for a teapot in Wuxi is a unique experience that involves various techniques to choose the perfect piece. Masters happily share with visitors a wide variety of artistically crafted teapots including designs with two spouts, designs that change color according to the temperature and type of tea, and designs that alter the flow of the pour into a twisting stream.
FRESHWATER PEARLS: A wide variety of pearls ranging in size and color are available throughout Wuxi.
Here you can easily design your own necklace, pendant, bracelet, or earrings and have them made for you while you wait. In Wuxi pearls are also marketed for their medicinal properties. Pearl powder is often used as a key ingredient in skin care products.
CLAY FIGURINES: Famous throughout China, Wuxi's Huishan Clay Figurines have been produced here for over 400 years. Popular figurines include the Old Man of Longevity, known as Lao Shou Xing, and Da A Fu. The Da A Fu is a plump young boy who is often made holding a fish or a peach, both symbolizing prosperity.
