Urumqi Transportation

Air: Urumqi International Airport services the city of Urumqi and is located 16 kilometers northwest of the city. The airport has daily flights to and from all major cities in China.  It also acts as a connecting airport to and from China to West Asia, Europe and Africa. From the airport to downtown Urumqi, visitors can take a shuttle bus or taxi at the entrance of the airport.

Train: Urumqi Railway station is located in the southwest part of the city. Here, you will be able to find direct trains to most major cities in China, such as Beijing, Shanghai, Dunhuang, Xian, Lanzhou, and Chongqing. It is recommended that you reserve hard or soft sleepers if you intend to travel longer routes. The station also connects to other cities in Xinjiang such as Korla, Aksu, Kuitun, and Liuyuan. Travel from the railway station to the city center by taxi will be approximately 10 RMB. Public busses are also available. It is advisable that you purchase tickets at least three days in advance. There are ticket offices located at Huanghe Lu and Jianshe Lu.

Bus: Long distance buses service Urumqi and most cities in Xinjiang daily. The extensive highway system in the region makes travel by bus an ideal way to reach remote areas. The city has several bus stations so please check with your local travel agent or hotel attendant before purchasing tickets.

Taxi: Once inside Urumqi, taking a taxi is the most convenient way to get around.  It is fairly inexpensive and comfortable. The meter starts at 6 RMB and increases by 1.5 RMB every kilometer.
