South Pasture

 The Southern Pasture, also known as West White Poplar Gully, rests at the northern foot of Karawuquan Mountain, about 90km outside of Urumqi. The pasture covers an area of nearly 120sq km. The area is very popular among visitors and local residents who frequent the area as a summer retreat from Urumqi.

The area is most well known for the West White Poplar Gully, a vibrantly green stretch of grassland surrounded by towering snow capped mountains, lined with dense rows of lush fir trees. Horses and cows graze peacefully in the vast pasture while local Kazaks entertain visitors with offerings of locally made goods like fragrant milk tea, mare's milk, cheese, and roasted lamb. Local children also roam the pasture entertaining visitors with traditional forms of dancing. Other natural wonders within the pasture include Chrysanthemum Tai, Zhaobi Mountain, Miad’er Gully, and Daxi Gully.
