Red Hill
Located in the center of Urumqi, Red Hill is regarded as the symbol of the city. Named for the reddish-brown earth that covers its surface, Red Hill spans 1.5km in length, and 1km in width from east to west, standing at an altitude of 910m above sea level.
The Urumqi River flows calmly along the foot of Red Hill. Less than 1km away across the river, Yamalike Hill mirrors Red Hill. Legend tells us that long ago, an evil dragon escaped from the quiet waters of Heavenly Lake but was captured by the Queen Mother of the Western Heavens who's task it was to watch over this area. With the swift arm of her sword, the Queen Mother sliced the dragon in two. The two halves of the dragon became Red Hill and Yamalike Hill, while the sword transformed into Urumqi River.
The area has since been preserved as open park space, welcoming locals and visitors daily. From the top of the hill visitors enjoy splendid vistas of the peaceful river that flows below.
