Resting on the Guanzhong Plain extending North the Wei River and reaching as far South as the Qinling Mountains, Xian is surrounded by a natural beauty that is enriched by the ancient remainants of architectural masterpieces including the Famen Temple, Wild Goose Pagodas, the Great Mosque, and Qianling Mausoleum. Throughout modern history over 4,000 historical and cultural relics and architectural sites have been excavated revealing Xian's extensive, fascinating past. Included among these extensive discoveries is the Terracotta Warriors, built under the command of China's first emperor, Qin Shi Huang.
In The Past
Over 3,000 years of intriguing cultural history lies within the ancient city walls of Xian. Serving as one of China's 8 ancient capitals, the city stood at the epicenter of cultural and political dominance intermittently throughout 10 dynasties spanning a period of 1,100 years beginning first in the Qin Dynasty in 221 BC and extending through to the Tang Dynasty that ended in 904.
Prior to the beginning of the Ming Dynasty Xian was called Chang'an, translated from Chinese to mean 'perpetual peace'. The name Xian directly translates to 'west peace'. Xian's strategic position in China's northwest Shaanxi Province made it the ideal starting point of the ancient Silk Road extending westward from Asia to Europe. As the anchor city of this vital route, Xian was regarded as a critical point of cultural exchange between the East and West.
Xian Today
With a population of 8.25 million, nearly 2.7 million of which occupy urban areas, Xian has developed into one of China's flourishing modern cities. In part due to a governmentally driven economic renewal effort geared toward China's internal cities, this historically rich region continues to reserve its place in China's history books. Still considered the cultural, industrial, and educational heart of the northwest region, Xian is widely renound for its advancements in research and development, national security, and is even home to China's space program.
Much of Xian is accessible on foot but a fairly extensive bus system provides transportation for the majority of Xian's residents. Slated for completion in 2020, the first subway system in currently under construction and is expected to serve the metropolitan area with 6 rail lines.
