U CHINA TRAVEL CEO

With a population of more than 20 million, Shanghai is not only China's largest city, but also ranks as the world's 2nd largest metropolitan center with Mumbai as the only city boasting a larger urban population.  While Shanghai's distinctly modern urban fabric sets it apart from many cities in China, it still possesses architectural elements of ancient China, striking a beautiful balance between past and present. Unique to Shanghai though is a historical recognition of China's brief colonial past, embodied through the liveliness of areas such as the Bund or the French Concession.

Shanghai's dynamic cultural and economic vibrance has earned it a reputation amongst the world's greatest cities.  China's most prosperous and advanced city has transformed dramatically in recent years evolving as a thriving modern metropolis rivaling New York and Paris as the most sought after destinations to visit.  Such eager willingness to embrace modernization speaks as a true testament to China's enthusiastic attitude towards a dedicated investment in development.

In The Past
Established as a port town at the mouth of the Yangtze River, Shanghai grew as a center of trade with its main industries being fishing and textiles and served as a vital artery within China due to a nearly equidistant proximity between Beijing and Hong Kong.   Shanghai's central location along China's eastern seaboard has historically placed the port town in an essential role as the connection between China and the rest of the world.  Functioning as mainland China's most active port of international trade, Shanghai has always been regarded as a critical gateway to the West, and in recent decades has exploded as a multinational point of focus for foreign business and investment.   Although the city experienced a period of dormancy in 1949 as a result of political reforms, it began to see a rapid progression towards economic dominance again in 1980 when restrictions on trade with international markets were lifted.

Nowaday's Shanghai
Extensive means of public transportation, numerous urban green-spaces, and tree-lined avenues make this energetic metropolis a desirable location for any visitor.  One of the world's most extensive metro systems is currently expanding beneath the streets of Shanghai, while above ground a highly efficient bus system keeps traffic levels down.  While Shanghai's air quality surpasses that of the majority of Chinas cities, rapid growth keeps it at a lower level than most international cities comparable in size.

In The Future
In recent years local governments and industries have dedicated tireless attention to establishing Shanghai as a world class destination, propelling the city to the forefront of Chinese and international agendas.  Chosen to host the 2010 World Expo, the city has been preparing whole-heartedly to welcome the international community to enjoy the brilliance of Shanghai and witness the changing face of China's urban identity.
