Regarded as the "Oriental Hawaii", Sanya is located in the southern region of Hainan Province along the exact same latitude as Hawaii. Because of its central location within Southeast Asia, Sanya is the prime tropical destination for vacationers throughout Asia. The city serves as the political and economic center of Hainan, providing an important outlet for foreign trade between Southwest Asia, Africa, and Europe.

The city covers an area of 1,920sq km in the southern valley of the Wuzi Mountains. It's coastline stretches more than 200km, winding along 10 inlets and 19 harbors. The area known today as Sanya City was first inhabited more than 10,000 years ago. Numerous ancient relics have been discovered along the shores of Sanya Beach, including collections of ancient Persian tombs found beneath the surface of Sanya's coastline.
