At the center of the political, economical, and cultural importance of Yunnan Province lies Kunming. With more than 2400 years of history, it acted as a gateway to trade between Tibet, Sichuan Province, Myanmar, and India and is currently one of the most popular destinations in Southwest China. Its allure of highland scenery, extraordinary landforms, and exotic habitats can be seen at such scenic spots as The Stone Forest, Grand View Tower, Sani Minority Village, and the Green Lake Park.
Kunming's mild climate and constant foliage proves it to be a great destination for travelers all year long. As a result, it is known as "the City of Eternal Spring". Its natural attractions of extraordinary vistas and landscapes mixed with consistent temperatures make Kunming a memorable place to visit.
Head to the city center of Kunming to find commercial attractions and interesting architecture, such as Jinma Biji Square and Dongfeng Square, with its five interlaced roads. Renmin Lu, Qingnian Lu, and Zhengyi Lu are the main commercial areas. If you would like to walk around one of the pedestrian streets, stroll to Nanping Jie, Jingxing Huania Shichang, or Jinma Biji Fang.
Kunming is also home to the most diverse minority culture in China with 26 different types of ethnic minorities such as Bai, Hani, Dai, Miao, and many more. Each group has its own unique culture and celebrates festivals throughout the year. The Yi people have the Torch Festival and the Golden Temple Fair, while the Dai enjoy the Water-Splashing Festival.
With the increase of visitors in the past decade, Kunming now has more than one hundred star rated hotels and variety of guesthouses depending on your budget. It also boasts a wide variety of delicious local dishes such as Across Bridge Rice Noodle and Xuanwei Ham. These can be enjoyed at well-known restaurants around the city or at the night markets where you'll also find a number of bars and cafes. A trip to Kunming will definitely leave you with many great memories of the natural and cultural uniqueness of the Yunnan Province.
