Centrally located in China's northern Inner Mongolia region, Hohhot thrives as the area's political, cultural, and industrial core. Fairly young in contrast to many of China's ancient towns, Hohhot was founded under the Mongolian Prince, Altan Khan in 1581. The town was originally known as Kuku-Khoto, or the Green Town. It was not until 1947 when Inner Mongolia was made an Autonomous Region that Hohhot was chosen as the region's capital.
The town discretely rests between the Yinshan Mountain and the Yellow River, secluded from the excitement and extravagance of China's modern cities. More than 30 different ethnic groups call Hohhot home including Mongolian, Han, Manchu, Hui, Tibetan, and Dwoer.
The region's magnificent natural scenery makes it a perfect escape for visitors hoping to experience China's pure beauty. The Huitengxile and Xilamuren Grasslands drape the landscape with rolling waves of lush green, while cultural relics including the Dazhao Temple, Inner Mongolian Museum, and Mausoleum of Genghis Khan enricn the area with historic splendor.
A vast range of activities is available when visiting Hohhot. The local population welcomes visitors to share in their traditional culture through delicious delicacies, sharing Mongolian folk songs, and observing daily life in the villages. When shopping for unique specialties from Inner Mongolia you will find fine cashmere, camel hair products, and hand carved knives ornate with designs native to Mongolian culture. The Grasslands also abound with activities such as horse back riding, camel riding, and Mongolian wrestling.
