Changdu's prime geographical location within the Sichuan Basin near the banks of the Min and Tuo Rivers, two branches of the Yangtze River, covers more than 12.3 thousand square kilometers of extremely fertile land.  More than 40 rivers running through the region provide ample irrigation for the area that is abundantly rich in minerals and natural resources.  The ideal natural conditions of the region insure a lush environment for China's largest natural habitat of giant pandas.  The world's only research and breeding center dedicated to the giant panda is located in Chengdu.

Residing along the western edge of the Sichuan Province, Chengdu has served as the capital city of the region since the 4th century BC.  For centuries it has thrived as a vital center for transportation, communication, and economic development in southwest China.  As the anchor city of the southern Silk Road, it saw economic prosperity through trade.  Changdu's industry flourished in the form of handicrafts, establishing Chengdu as a cultural base for delicately crafted goods, with a high reputation for their elaborate use of bronze and embroidery.  Changdu also is noted as the first place where paper currency was used.  With a history that spans more than 2,000 years, Chengdu has remained unshaken in its position as a leading commercial, political, and military stronghold in the Sichuan area. 
Like many of China’s urban areas Chengdu is rapidly growing as a prosperous financial center, opening its doors to countless international financial institutions.  The city is well connected by national highways that link Chengdu to Shanxi, Tibet, and Yunnan.  Currently many transportation projects are underway to expand and improve the city’s infrastructure systems.   It has gained a reputation in recent years as one of China’s most desirable cities to live in, and one worthy of long term investment due to its economic and environmental stability.  Adding to Chengdu’s list of ideal characteristics is that it is far more calm than most of China’s densely populated, energetic urban centers.  The people of Chengdu tend to place a great emphasis on enjoying life, and do so at a much more relaxed pace.
No visit to Chengdu is ever complete without a taste of the local cuisine.  Known for its affection for very spicy foods, traditional Sichuan style dishes will excite any adventurous palate.
