Nanjing Road

The premier shopping street in Shanghai, known as Nanjing Road, is now making a commercialized comeback after decades of Maoist austerity.  With its hundreds of shops, it hosts nearly 1 million visitors every day.  It stretches 6 kilometers from the Bund on one end towards the junction of Jingan Temple and Yan’an Street, with People’s Square lying in the middle.  You can easily reach the middle of the shopping street from Metro Line 2 which runs along the road most of the way.
Nanjing Road has undergone significant change with big traditional stores disappearing while modern shopping malls, specialty stores, theatres, and international hotels developing along the street.  Over 600 businesses on Nanjing Road offer countless famous brand name products, superior quality, and new fashions. Upscale stores include Tiffany, Mont Blanc, and Dunhill. In addition, approximately a hundred traditional stores and specialty shops still provide traditional silk goods, jade, embroidery, wool, and clocks.
