Pingyao Shopping

Much like the well-preserved city itself, many of the items that can be found here stem from the rich history of the ancient city. A stroll along the west gate will find streets lined with shops and stalls, many of which sell handmade crafts that are made on the spot.

Cloth Shoes:  The traditional choice of shoes are commonly worn by locals walking up and down the dusty roads of Pingyao. These handicrafts are comfortable, practical and exquisitely made either in simple black or with intricately embroidered patterns. The cloth allows for ventilation as well as absorbency.   Many locals still choose these shoes over modern leather ones due to comfort, persevering another aspect of ancient China.

Tuiguang Lacquerware (Polished Lacquerware):  Polished lacquerware dates back to the Tang Dynasty (618-907) and prospered in the Ming and Qing Dynasty.  Pingyao is well known for this wonderfully smooth, shining surface and it's antique appearance. The primary color is typically coal-black, but other colors such as Chinese red, apricot, or green-purple are also used. The designs are unique and many times stem from classical novels or legends. Adding the to each individual piece are the inlays of small polished shells, ivory, colored pebbles, or pearls. Jewelry boxes, wardrobes, large and small screens, bowls are all available with the lacquerware finish.

Liuhetai Pillow:  Different than a traditional pillow because of its unique shape of being cubuoid with symmetrical communicating apertures on each side, the Liuhetai pillow is said to promote good health by allowing the pillow to breathe. This not only relieves pressure on the ear during sleep but also hopefully allows for a peaceful night of rest.
