Nanjing Shopping
In recent years Nanjing has erupted as one of China's modern cultural and commercial epicenters. While shopping in Nanjing you will come across everything from finely crafted traditional treasures to international clothing and electronics. The most desired handicrafts unique to Nanjing include cloud brocades, rain flower stones, and Jinling folded fans.
CLOUD BROCADES: Originating during China's Southern dynasties (420-589), cloud brocades depict detailed patterns woven into refined silk. The patterns typically include vibrant colors and elegant imagery. Cloud brocades became widely popular during the Qing Dynasty, gaining a reputation as one of China's three revered styles of brocade. During this period the style of patterning was woven into imperial clothing. Today the style is integrated into costumes, cushions, carpets, quilt covers, and intricate wall hangings.
JINLING FOLDED FANS: Jinling folded fans are known not only for their functional purpose, but also for their elaborate craft and artistic detail. Available in a variety of different materials and styles including bamboo, bone, and silk, Jinling fans are also often used as decorative pieces because of their beauty.
RAIN FLOWER STONES: Nanjing's unique rain flower stones almost all originate from Yuhuatai, Liuhe, and Jiangpu. Known also as Flower Rain Terrace, the area of Yuhuatai is regarded as a memorial for Chinese martyrs in Nanjing. When placed in water, rain flower stones reveal vibrant patterns. Folk artists also craft the colorful stones into rings, earrings, necklaces, and pendants.
