Lijiang Shopping

Lijiang's long history saw the Tea-Horse Ancient Road move many merchants and exotic handicrafts through its city, still evident in Lijiang's Old Town. The original commercial area centered around Square Street, where many specialty items can still be purchased. 

Naxi Handicrafts: The bracelets and necklaces are both colorful and uniquely designed with Ancient Dongba hieroglyphics carved and painted on. T-shirts and knitted shawls are also available with the hieroglyphic designs, all of which can be found easily in Old Town.

Bunong and Jixiang Bells: The bells are popular souvenirs that are inspired by the bells of the horse caravans that once traveled the Ancient Road. They depict the romantic caravan of the day. Known as the lucky bell, the Jixiang Bell was used as a sacrificial utensil for the Naxi Group.

Wines: The Lijiang area produces two types of mild wine, U Wine and Sulima Wine. U Wine has its origin dating back to the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) while Sulima Wine is cultivated by the Mosue people who live Northeast of Lijiang City.

Burned Wood Carvings: This popular souvenir is a local specialty carved from a wood block.  Have your photo taken and come back in a few hours to the local artist to find your picture etched into the wood with the city of Lijiang in the background if you so desire. The quality reproduction is near photo-real depending on the skill of the individual artist.
