Lhasa Transportation

Air: Lhasa's Gonggar Airport services Lhasa City and is 97 kilometers away. Travel time between the airport and Lhasa City is approximately 2 hours by bus. Also stopping at the airport are buses from Shigatse or Tsetang. Most major cities in China have air routes to Gonggar Airport.

Train: There is plenty of majestic scenery if you travel by the Lhasa Express, the world's highest railway line at Tangula Pass, 5057m. The first leg runs from Xining to Golmud, where oxygen is released into the cabin to prevent altitude sickness.  The second section runs from Golmud to Lhasa where you’ll encounter the breathtaking landscape that entices travelers from all around the world.

Minibus:  Once inside Lhasa, a convenient way to get around town is by minibus. It is the main form of transportation here and stations can easily be found around Beijing Road.  Busses usually run from later in the morning to early in the evening, costing about 2 RMB per person.

Taxi: Another way to get around town is by Taxi. It is easy to hail a taxi on the city streets of Lhasa.  The fare is 10 RMB for travel anywhere in the city. If you would like to venture outside of the city, it is recommended that you negotiate the fare with the driver beforehand.

Pedicab: This is a unique and inexpensive way to get around the city. Pedicabs typically carry two people and can cost anywhere from 4 to 7 RMB.  Although slower than a taxi, it is a great way to enjoy the city, especially in the downtown area.

Bicycle: Bicycles can also be rented on an hourly or daily basis for a very reasonable price at many hostels along Barkhor Street. It is another way to take in the city at your own pace.
