Norbulingka
Lhasa's "Treasure Park" is located along the banks of the Kyichu River in the western suburb of the city. Only 1km from the renound Potala Palace, Norbulingka covers 
an area of 360,000sq meters and is known to be the largest of Tibet’s man-made gardens. The complex is fragmented into more than 370 rooms. It became known as the Summer Palace when it served as a summer retreat for the 7th Dali Lama. It is preserved under UNESCO’s World Heritage List as part of the Potala Palace Historical Ensemble.
The palace was built upon a site that was once covered in unkempt weeds and was home to many wild animals. The 7th Dali Lama was very fond of the location and would visit often. Recognizing his affection for the garden, the Qing magistrate ordered that a palace be constructed there. In 1740 Norbulingka Palace was built, and in 1751, the Dali Lama began construction on a second palace within the same complex, known as Kelsang Palace. In its 200-year life span, the palace has seen extensive expansions, growing to the scale it is today.
