Kunming Climate & Best Time to Visit Kunming
Kunming attracts thousands of tourists to the city with its abundance of breathtaking natural sceneries coupled with mild temperatures. The average annual temperature is approximately 15.5 degrees Celsius (58.1 degrees Fahrenheit).
As a result of a low-latitude climate, Kunming does not experience extreme heat in the summer or bitter cold in the winter. The warmest month occurs in July, with an average temperature of 18 degrees Celsius (64.4 degrees Fahrenheit) while the coldest month of January is approximately 8 degrees Celsius (46.4 degrees Fahrenheit).
The best time to travel to Kunming is between March and October, although there is no peak or low season due to its consistent temperatures. Foliage remains green all year long thus it always appears to be spring. However, the temperature between night and day may vary greatly between 12 degrees Celsius (54 degrees Fahrenheit) to 20 degrees Celsius (68 degrees Fahrenheit) so it is highly recommended that you pack warm clothing.
There is an abundance of natural attractions in Kunming as well as many festivals throughout the year, particularly between March and October, which also corresponds with the fruit-ripening season. Many ethnic minority groups sponsor festivals and performances such as the Knife-Pole Festival of Lisu, the Water-Splashing Festival in Dai, and a Torch Festival in the Stone Forest.
A trip to Kunming any time of the year is well worth the visit, as it has so many natural attractions and colorful cultural scenes throughout the city.
