Sani Minority Villages

Almost 90k east of Kunming lies the Stone Forest, the mysterious, splendid home of the Sani people. As a branch of the Yi minority tribe, the Sani people have established a number of small ethnic villages that surround the Yi minority villages. The tribes are known for the mystical ancient traditions and beliefs that shape their unique cultural identity. The Sani people practice traditional folk customs and minority dances. They are also known for their exquisite embroidery skills. The colorful vibrancy of Sani embroidery in juxtaposition with the karst landscapes of the Stone Forest is by far one of Kunming's most spectacular offerings.

Legends surround the Sani people and their homeland, adding to the mysterious nature of this fascinating minority group. Their culture has been the subject of poetry, expressing the beauty behind the unique community. The Torch Festival, which takes place on the 24th day of the 6th lunar month, welcomes visitors to experience the mysteriously intriguing culture of the Sani people.
