Hohhot Climate & Best Time to Visit Hohhot
Hohhot's weather is defined by its temperate, semi-arid climate. The annual precipitation here is typically very low and inconsistent, with 50-450mm falling a year. The summer months tend to see fairly warm temperatures with days averaging 39 degrees Celsius, while winters are usually very long and cold, averaging only 100 frost-free days a year. During the winter season temperatures have been known to drop as low as -45 degrees Celsius.
An unusual characteristic of the region is drastic temperature changes that can occur throughout the day. Within a given day, temperatures can drop up to 15 degrees, making it necessary to bring along long sleeves, even during the summer. Spring is often host to droughts and occasional sandstorms, and no winter in Hohhot escapes the occasional blizzard. These seasonal weather conditions pose great difficulties for farmers in the region.
The summer season (May-September) is usually the best time to visit, when temperatures remain fairly moderate and extreme conditions are minimal. If you are traveling to Hohhot to enjoy the lush grasslands, the best time of year to visit is between July and early September when the grasses are tall and vibrantly green.
