Long cold winters and short cool summers have earned Harbin the nickname of "Ice City". Located in the Northeast Region of China, the winter months see average temperatures drop to a chilling -19 degrees Celsius (-2 degrees Fahrenheit) with average high temperatures at -13 degrees Celsius. Although it is considered to be a humid continental climate, similar to Moscow, Montreal, and St Petersburg in temperature, Harbin experiences little in terms of precipitation during the winter.
The summers are quite pleasant with average temperatures around 21 degrees Celsius (70 degrees Fahrenheit) and plenty of rainfall between June and August. The wettest month is July with an average precipitation of 160mm or 6.3 inches. It is said that from July to September is the most ideal time to visit Harbin, especially during the autumn months, when the rainfall subsides yet the weather remains at a comfortable temperature.
Although winter in Harbin can be brutally cold, it can also being stunningly beautiful, attracting thousands of visitors each year. The snowy scenery and ice filled city invites winter festivals and activities. A visit to this city anytime of the year will surely contain unique memories.
