West Lake
At the heart of Hangzhou's beauty lies West Lake, what many would consider one of the most scenic spots in all of China. The area covers 60 square kilometers, of which
West Lake occupies and area of 5.6 square kilometers with a circumference of 15 kilometers surrounded by an array of spectacular trees and hills. The average depth of West Lake is approximately five feet as the lake was originally a shallow sea inlet. Now, it comprises five distinct areas, the largest being Outer Lake that encompasses three man-made islands called Three Pools Mirroring the Moon, Mid-Lake Pavilion and Mr. Ruan Yuan’s Mount. In the evening, on a moonlit night, the landscape can be seen reflecting in the pool of water, giving any visitor another perspective of the beauty of Hangzhou.
Not to be forgotten are the smaller lakes that bound Outer Lake, know as North Inner Lake, Yuehu Lake, West Inner Lake and Lesser South Lake. Hugged by hilly peaks, rhythmic openings, architectural elements, and numerous sculptures, the lakes lend to the majestic scenery of the area and allow artists from all over to marvel with awe and inspiration. Venture to Solitary Hill Island, between Outer Lake and the North Inner Lake and you will encounter the former home of Lin Bu, a talented poet and painter from the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127) who lived primarily in seclusion, planting plum trees and raising cranes. You will also be able to view the impressive ‘Twin Peaks Piercing the Clouds’, referring to the South and North Peak, whose tips are the only thing that can be seen piercing the thick fog. Take winding paths or stone step up to the peaks and you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the splendor of West Lake.
