Six Harmonies Pagoda

Truly an architectural wonder of ancient China, the Six Harmonies Pagoda was originally built in the Northern Song Dynasty (386-581) to calm the tidal bores of the Qiantang River.  The pagoda as it stands today was constructed during the Southern Song Dynasty (420-589) out of wood and brick with additional eaves added during the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) Dynasties.   The towering octagonal structure measures 60 meters high with seven interior stories, although it appears to be thirteen on the outside.
Once inside, take the spiral staircase leading to the top and you’ll be delighted to find intricate details and paintings of animals and nature at each of the seven carved ceilings.   On the way up you’ll also notice that each storey of the pagoda has four architectural elements; the exterior walls, a zigzagged corridor, interior walls, and a small chamber all of which lend to the unique nature of this spectacular building.   Once at the top of the pagoda, you’ll be offered amazing panoramic views of the Qianting River Bridge, Qianting River and the well-known tidal surges that occur three days after the Mid-Autumn Festival.
