Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal

A marvelous undertaking in ancient China, the Grand Canal is the longest man-made waterway in the world at 1,764 km in length, far surpassing the Suez and Panama Canals.  More than 2,000 years old, it connects Hangzhou to south of Beijing in North China and interconnects the Haihe River, Yellow River, Huaihe River, Yangtze River, and Qaintang River ensuring trade and transportation thrived in ancient China.   Built section by section during different dynasties, the Grand Canal as we know it, was not linked until the Sui Dynasty (581-618), under Emperor Yangdi.  The large-scale expansion spanned six years and roughly 3 millions lives were lost due to hard labor and hunger.
At the time of completion, many saw it as a waste of money and manpower.  However, it eventually facilitated in the economic growth of the region because of accessibility to the river systems, allowing foods and goods to be transported with ease.   Not only did it push the economy forward, but it also acted as a bridge to the north and strengthen China’s defense as a whole.
Today, the canal is still being used as a link between Hangzhou and Suzhou to transport goods as well as people.  A boat trip along the Canal offers visitors impressive views of the serene city with all of its trees, hills, lakes, and bridges.
