Reed Flute Cave
Amidst the rural scenery of the quiet northwest reaches of Guilin City lies one of the region's most stunningly unique landscapes. The karst formations of Red Flute Cave extend nearly 240 meters along the southern face of Guangming Hill, also known as Bright Hill. Named for the reeds surrounding the mouth of the cave, the area is a majestic composition of stalactites, stalagmites, stone pillars, stone curtains, birds, plants, and animals, each adding to the rich palate of unique forms and vibrant, illuminated tones. The cave is commonly regarded as the ‘Palace of Natural Arts’ because of its elegantly eclectic arrangement of natural elements. Like paintings within a gallery, a number of the cave's remarkable vistas have been named, such as Mushroom Hill, Dragon Pagoda, Pines in the Snow, Virgin Forests, and Red Curtain. The walls of the cave bare inscriptions spanning centuries, revealing the historical significance of the area. In 1962 the cave was opened to the public and was later accentuated with a number of artificial lights to heighten the visual brilliance of the cave's many stunning vistas.
