Datong,Steeped in Majestic History
Established more than 2,400 years ago as a strategic military post due to its location within the northern reaches of Shanxi Provence, Datong served primarily to deter Mongolian invaders that approached along China's northern boarder. Historical remains of Datong's militaristic beginnings still stand approximately 40km north of the city, where dilapidated watchtowers line the Great Wall. Numerous raids by Mongols wore hard on Datong, giving the city a boarder town appearance as it evolved through history. The Northern Wei Dynasty brought the Toba people to Datong, a nomadic Turkish tribe who would evolve into devout Buddhist followers. Remains of their ancient presence are carved into the magnificent walls of the Yungang Grottoes. First established in 490, the caves are revered among the most impressive throughout China, and are preserved under UNESCO's World Heritage List. Many Buddhist temples also serve to proclaim Datong's historical glory, including the Hanging Monastery and the Yingxian Wooden Pagoda.
