Datong Climate & Best Time to Visit Datong
Four distinct seasons define Datong's continental monsoon climate.
Winters tend to be long, cold, and dry, with the season lasting four months on average. Strong winds blow from the northwest, keeping temperatures steady between -12 to 6 degrees Celsius. January is often the coldest month, with temperatures averaging -11 degrees.
During spring temperatures rise rapidly during the day, but still tend to dip lower when night falls. Spring is characterized by occasional snowfall, but the light dusting usually thaws quickly.
Summer temperatures range from 19 to 22 degrees Celsius. The majority of Datong's 400mm of rain falls during summer, bringing to life a variety of colors washed throughout Datong's landscape.
The first signs of frost typically appear towards the end of September, as fall temperatures gradually overpower summer's warmth. Autumn skies in Datong are often clear and sunny. The best time to visit is between the months of April and October, avoiding the dry chill of winter and taking advantage of the mild, warm summer months.
