Chengdu Climate & Best Time to Visit Chengdu
A humid sub-tropical climate keeps Chengdu mildly warm most of the year. The city occupies a prime location at the western edge of the Sichuan Province beneath the Quinling Mountains. This protects the region from bitter Siberian winds that blow from the south, and insures short winters that are generally mild. Summers are quite long and although rain is common year-round, it is usually more frequent during this time of year. Because of it's location Chengdu experiences minimal changes from season to season; the hotter months don't tend to be unbearably hot, and the cold months are never too daunting. The average low in winter is around 3 C, while the average high in summer reaches a comfortable 29 C.
The best time to visit Chengdu is in the spring (March and April) when the city experiences the most sunshine. It doesn't rain as much this time of year either. Chengdu typically sees a peak in visitors during the summer months. Autumn, and especially winter are sometimes cloudy, but temperatures are mild.
If you are visiting Chengdu in the spring T-shirts, sweaters, and light pants should keep you comfortable. If traveling in the summer, T-shirts, shorts, and rain gear should do the trick. Bring along a jacket, sweaters, and jeans in the winter. A word to the wise; no matter when you plan to visit Chengdu be sure to pack something for rain just to be safe!
