Jiuzhaigou Valley Scenic and Historic Interest Area

Within lower reaches of the Baishuijiang River just north of Nai'erna Peak of the Minshan Mountains lies the winding expanse of the Jiuzhaigou Valley. The area became known as the Jiuzhaigou Valley Scenic and Historic Interest Area when it fell under the watchful protection of the World Heritage Association in 1992. The valley stretches 60k from north to south, and is 19k wide. The valley's lush forested peaks reach an elevation of 4,800m, encompassing a diverse series of ecosystems rich in resources, vegetation, and animal life.
The region was initially inhabited by 9 ancient Tibetan tribes, and remained undiscovered by the government until 1972. The region became the site of destructive logging practices until it was preserved as a national park in 1982. The valley is defined by some of the region's most superb landscapes, including fascinating karst landmasses and picturesque waterfalls. Over 140 bird species inhabit the valley in accompaniment with a number of endangered plant and animal species, including the treasured Giant Panda.
