Baoguang Temple
Acquiring its name, which means “Devine Light,” during the Tang Dynasty under Emperor Xizong (618-907), Baoguang Temple has endured as a historical and architectural masterpiece. Located 18k outside of Chengdu City center in Xindu County, Baoguang Temple embodies a peaceful and majestic environment, adorned with ancient sculptural relics, multiple courtyards, and 5 halls supported by a 400 pillar structural system.
Legend holds that the temple was named when the Emperor witnessed a glowing light from underneath the temple one night. His curiosity led the Emperor to conduct an excavation beneath the temple, where here monks discovered 13 Shelizi, crystal-clear Buddhist Relics.
Following the discovery of the Shelizi, the dagoba, or pagoda protecting the relics was constructed, reaching a height of 30m and 13 stories. The dagoba has seen multiple renovations and repairs throughout later dynasties.
Within the temple 5 halls contain hundreds of uniquely sculpted Buddhist statues depicting various prayerful positions and expressions. A diverse array of Buddhist sculptures has been found nowhere else in China, transforming these fascinating relics into true treasures. The temple grounds also house a number of state treasures, cultural relics, scriptures, and nearly 400 historic paintings.
