Temple of Heaven

Construction of the Temple of Heaven began in 1406, and was completed in 1420 under the guidance of the Ming dynasty Yongle emperor (who also supervised construction of the Forbidden City).  Located in the southern part of Beijing, this architectural masterpiece was declared a UNESCO world heritage site in 1998, and following an extensive and costly restoration in 2005, is now in beautiful condition.

The design and layout of the temple is very symbolic of Heaven and Earth, often described by a circle and a square respectively, which explains the many circular structures on the site. There are examples of traditional symbolism all over the temple; for example, the special dark blue roof tiles, which represent Heaven, and the arrangment of pillars in the 'Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests' which reflect the four seasons, the twelve months and the twelve divisions of traditional chinese time, all of which combine to convey the concept of the solar year. Covering almost 3 square km of land, the grounds include many buildings, including the 'Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests' with its famous triple tiered roof, the 'Imperial Vault of Heaven' which is surrounded by the 'Echo Wall', said to transmit sound very clearly anywhere within its circumference, and the 'Round Altar' which is the main altar of the Temple of Heaven, and is where the emperors prayed for good weather.

The grounds are very popular with locals, and contain many beautiful cypress and pine trees planted during the Ming and Qing dynasties. It is particularly busy in the mornings, when residents come to do their daily excercises, practice Tai Chi, and walk around the gardens.

Widely considered one of China's architectural gems, this highly symbolic and tranquil temple is not to be missed.
