Tanzhe Temple
This ancient temple, located at the foot of Baozhu Mountain in the mountainous area to the west of Beijing, is named after the deep pool (Longtan) behind it, and the ancient mulberry tree (Zhi) in front. One of the oldest temples in the area, it was built in the Jin dynasty (265-420) 800 years before the city of Beijing was even founded.
Set against dramatic mountain scenery, the temple has been praised for its beauty throughout the ages. It was also a popular destination for court eunuchs, as the mulberry tree is linked to fertility in chinese tradition. It is said that Kublai Kahn's daughter, the princess Miaoyan, was a nun here, and is buried in the grounds.
