Five Pagoda Temple
Located in the west of Beijing, Five Pagoda Temple was established during the reign of the Ming Dynasty Emperor Zhu Di in 1473. According to legend, during the early period of reign of the emperor's reign, an Indian monk arrived in Beijing from western Asia. He presented Emperor Zhu Di five golden figures of Buddha and designs for the 'Diamond Throne Pagoda' of the Mahabodhi Temple in Bodh Gaya, India. The emperor greatly admired the monk's understanding and knowledge of Buddhism, and so he ordered the construction of Five Pagoda Temple, in accordance with the pictures that monk had given him.
Five Pagoda Temple is representative of some of the finest Buddhist stone art, constructed of brick and white marble and covered with hundreds of Buddhist relief carvings, including footprints, figures, animals and plants, as well as Indian language and scripture. It is said that each pagoda houses one of the five golden Buddhas the monk presented to Emperor Zhu Di.
Although it is no longer a working temple, the site now houses the Beijing Stone Carving Museum, which has a number of interesting exhibits. The temple gardens are also worth a visit, and a traditional teahouse has a tranquil atmosphere for a relaxing drink among the temple's ancient trees.
