Chuandixia Village

This little village is situated on a hillside in Mentougou District, around 80km from central Beijing. It is famous for its well-preserved Ming and Qing dynasty houses and picturesque location. Covering an area of approximately 1 hectare, the village is said to be home to around 70 families, living in traditional style courtyard houses.
The buildings are decorated with carvings, paintings and calligraphy, and subjects include auspicious symbols such as magpies, bats, lotus flowers, peonies and so on. These decorations indicate the social and economic statuses of their owners, and it is possible to see clear differences between the houses of the higher-ranking families and those of their subordinates.
Residents are incredibly warm and friendly, and often welcome visitors into their homes to eat or just look around and experience their way of life, which has remained largely unchanged for centuries.
