About 2010 Shanghai World Expo
SHANGHAI WORLD EXPO: BUILDING A BETTER CITY, CREATING A BETTER LIFE
The 2010 World Exposition in Shanghai promises to continue the grand tradition of one of the international community's most progressive events. Shanghai has invested great ingenuity and effort in preparation for the expo, pushing the envelope to its limits in what has emerged as China's modern fashion. The theme for 2010 is "Better City, Better Life," reflecting Shanghai's own rapid evolution throughout recent history. The exposition aims to highlight creativity as the driving force behind the development of better cities for our future. It is expected that Shanghai will welcome the largest number of participants and patrons in the expo's extensive history.
Theme
The concept behind 2010's theme, "Better City, Better Life, " addresses a worldwide effort to improve the standards of living within the urban environment. United Nations projections estimate that nearly 55% of the world's population lives within our cities. As our cities densify it is critically important that we seek to maintain and improve our quality of life as we step further into the future.
Sub-Themes
-Cultural blending within the urban environment
-Economic prosperity in cities
-Scientific and technological innovations for cities
-Redesigning the concept of community
-Urban and rural interaction
Emblem
The Chinese character meaning "world" served as inspiration for the emblem representing this year's expo. An interpretation of the character displays three people holding hands, symbolizing the world united in the quest for a better future.
Mascot
Also inspired by a Chinese character, the mascot for the 2010 expo resembles the symbol for "people", following the theme of human togetherness. Haibao, the mascot's name meaning treasure of the seas, is bright blue representing both the coexistence of the world's diverse cultures, as well as clear blue water, representing the importance of protecting our natural resources as we advance in our urban development.
